WESTSIDE METROS

Oregon Premier League

April 21, 2010

Westside Metros Soccer Families:

Many of you have heard that a group of competitive soccer clubs left Oregon Youth Soccer Association (OYSA) to form their own league.  I want to take the opportunity to explain this decision.

Westside Metros Soccer Club is honored to be a founding member of the Oregon Premier League (OPL), a consortium of eight of the top competitive soccer programs within the Portland metro area.

Additional founding member clubs include:
- Eastside United Soccer Club
- FC Portland Academy
- Lake Oswego Soccer Club
-
Oregon Soccer Academy
- Portland City United Soccer Club
- Southside Soccer Club
- Tualatin Hills United Soccer Club

Together, these clubs have won 125 of 160 the most recent Oregon State Cup titles.

The mission of the OPL is to offer the most competitive level of youth soccer in the state of Oregon. Over the last three years the OPL founding clubs have discussed ways to improve soccer in Oregon with OYSA. OYSA proved to be resistant to making changes and as a result, the OPL decided to leave OYSA and create a new vision for soccer in Oregon.

The OPL leagues and programs are unique and unlike previous programs because they have been designed by professional soccer coaches together with club presidents, rather than being designed strictly by administrators.  This OPL vision will be an extension of the OPL league that many of our U10-U12 teams have taken part in over the last three years.  Beginning in fall 2010, the league will expand to include the U10 - U19 age groups.  All members of the OPL including players, coaches, officials and administrators will be professionally associated and aligned with US Club Soccer, rather than with OYSA and USYSA.

The OPL will also partner with the Portland Timbers MLS franchise to form training centers of excellence.   We will also provide the opportunity for our players to be part of US Club Soccer’s id2 Program (a program similar to ODP).  The OPL has also been working with the top Washington soccer clubs to form the Northwest Champions League.  The Northwest Champions League will feature inter-state play between top Washington teams and top Oregon teams.  This league will be in addition to the regular OPL fall league for select teams.

More information about the OPL can be found at www.oregonpremierleague.com and www.westsidemetros.com
A slide presentation which explains more about the OPL is also attached.

We are excited that Westside Metros will be part of this new vision of soccer in Oregon.  Our teams will start taking part in these new programs beginning with the May 2010 tryouts.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us at the WSM office at 503 626-2975.
